I've gotten a few people asking me about what kind of work I do here at the Hippo Office in Shibuya, and my answer has been pretty much the same every time, “Depends on the week. Because every day is something different.”

Some days, they'll have me translating/editing documents. Some days, they'll have me making new photo albums for a school visit coming up (I'm currently working on one for Thanksgiving). Some days, I'll be writing for this blog, or writing a monthly LEX report, or shredding papers, or adding things to my calendar, or taking photos of coworkers for a New Years card I'm helping put together, etc., etc., etc. :)

But most everything, I do my desk (picture included). It's a sweet set-up, if I do say so myself, and it's so comfortable that I actually look forward to going to work. :D



And 'tis the season for English interviews. Lately, I've been doing a bunch of interviews all in English for various junior high and high school students to see if they'll be accepted into a yearlong homestay program abroad in America, Australia, Germany, and so on. It's a lot of fun for me to meet these kids (I call them kids, but they're not THAT much younger than me, haha.) And of course, it's really exciting for me to be able to use my English again, won't lie. ;)

What's most amazing to me is how different they all are. I've been very impressed by some of the answers these kids give me when I ask them tricky questions (won't post examples here, sorry). But they all seem to have a drive for studying abroad, and honestly, the older-sister-ness in me wishes they could all be accepted. I can't imagine doing an entire interview in Japanese at such a young age… My 14-year-old self would be so nervous, too!!

And so sorry about the lack of pictures this time around. Been busy at the office this week, but there will be more photos next time, I promise!

P.S. The photo of the royal milk tea I actually bought at Denny’s. Yeah, Denny’s out here is like super-fancy-dinner-cuisine place. Have classic Italian music playing and everything. Not kidding.

Hayley- Life goes on

Life goes on Yesterday, I was able to go into work for about half the day.  It was great being there, but it struck me how tired everyone looked.  It wasn't just them though. . . I know I looked tired too.  The emotional toll of the past days has been very draining.  There is so much going on, and so much uncertainty as events continue to unfold.  No matter where you turn, there is something to remind you that life is not as it should be. I look at my laptop, where BBC News' Live Stream reminds me of the unfolding situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.   I think of the rescue efforts in the north and all of the people who are living in temporary shelters.    And yet, looking outside this morning, life appears to be normal.  The sun is shining, people are riding by on their bikes, and the kindergarten bus shaped like a giant dachshund just drove past . . . to all appearances, life is normal.   ...

こんにちは！Konnichiwa! Hello! My host sister Asuka and I in 小えど, Japan Hi everyone!  My name is Stephanie, but in Japan I've already been given the nickname  Su-chan　 す－ちゃん    (su from Stephanie since the Japanese pronunciation is su-teh-fah-nee, and -chan is added to the end of a name when you are speaking to a younger person or a friend), so you can call me Su-chan! I am one of the five Hippo interns working in the LEX headquarters office in Tokyo this year. In addition to me, from Wisconsin, the intern team is made up of Tino from Mexico, Sakun and Ken Ken from China, and Hiu-chan from Korea.
